Outdoor Math - Family Teams

Students participated in a outdoor Family Teams event and participated in 2 activities while focussing on geometry and patterns in nature. Students used local materials gathered outside for concrete and pictorial representations of their thinking while giving them time and practice to use mathematical vocabulary and language to communicate their ideas.

●    Building 2D & 3D Shapes: Using sticks and string, tie them together to make nets/frames of 2D and 3D shapes. How do shapes come together to make new shapes? What shapes do you see within your shape? What could you create with your shapes?

●    Neighbourhood Math Walk: What shapes do you see? What numbers can you find? What could we count? What strategies can you use to estimate the number of leaves on a tree? What do you notice about the different patterns in plants and trees?
