Self Awareness: Student Scanning
During the Fall and then again in June, our students were asked the following questions: 1) Who are the adults at Quilchena that you feel believe in you and support you with your learning? 2) Do you feel you are included by the students of the Quilchena school community? 3) How do you feel you are doing at school? 4) How do you feel about yourself as a learner? 5) What helps you learn best?
In reviewing our scans, we learned that many of our students could name two or more staff members that cared for them and felt supported with their learning. In the fall, many of our students wrote that they felt 'ok' about their learning but were limited in describing how they learned best or what they needed to feel more successful as learners. When comparing our June scans, students were much more descriptive and had a stronger sense of self, what they needed as learners and could name their next steps in order to be successful learners. Staff realized the need to be intentional about the "why" of what the students are learning, ask intentional questions and also to give their students time to reflect on their learning to better know themselves as a whole student.
