Mathematical Instructional Routines

Many instructional routines make connections between visual/pictoral and symbolic representations of number and operations. They create opportunities to practice strategies and explain and justify solutions. They provide recall and develop math knowledge, practice and use math vocabulary and language through discourse, explain thinking, and building an understanding that math can be creative and approached in many ways. Teachers of all grades use instructional routines in their classrooms. Some examples are Esti-Mysteries, Number Talks, Splat!, and Same but Different.
